Considered by many to be the first true horror film, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920) exists as the quintessential definitive piece of German expressionist cinema. The film portrays not only its characters but the world itself as out of joint. The story of the insane Dr. Caligari and the somnambulist Cesare who follows Caligari’s horrific orders, the film anticipates Hitler and the German soldiers who “are only following orders.” Kinonik now has a tinted German print of this film, with German title cards, and in addition to live piano accompaniment by Carolyn Swartz, we will have someone in the theatre translating as the film progresses. This is not to be missed!.
