Written, directed by and co-starring Orson Welles, Touch of Evil (1958) is now widely regarded as one of Welles’s best motion pictures and one of the best classic-era films noir. A stark, perverse story of murder, kidnapping, and police corruption in a Mexican border town, the film also stars Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh. In Roger Ebert’s pantheon of Great Movies, Ebert and other critics see a parallel between Hank Quinlan, the drunken sheriff of a border town played by Welles, and Welles himself. Touch of Evil was to be the last film Welles was able to make in Hollywood.
