Directed by Alfred Hitchcock from a Daphne Du Maurier short story. Rebecca (1940) was Hitchcock’s first American film and won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Cinematography in 1940. The film stars Joan Fontaine as a young woman who marries the aristocratic widower Maxim de Winter (played by Laurence Olivier). But upon moving to Manderley—her groom’s baroque ancestral mansion—she learns that Rebecca, his deceased wife, haunts not only the estate but the temperamental, brooding Maxim as well. Rebecca is the quintessential psychological thriller.
