Directed by Fritz Lang, M (1931) is about a terrorized city, and a plump little man with wide eyes (a young Peter Lorre in his first film) who is a pathological child-killer, unable to control his urge for killing. The murderer is heard whistling the Grieg theme from ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’, increasingly imbued with menace as the film proceeds. Dark and expressionistic, the movie embodies several of Lang’s themes: the duality between justice and revenge, mob hysteria, and a helplessly trapped individual trying fruitlessly to escape as greater forces move inexorably to trap him.
